in cost point of view diamonds or emerald both are rare but i would say emeralds are more rare so they can be more expensive specially the Colombian ones, so have really been sold for millions of dollars in auctions, but in resale value i would vote for diamonds as there are more buyers for diamonds than emeralds..hope this helps..best vijay

To get 1/2 carat of Diamond one has to mine and process around 1 tonne of ore whereas to get 1 carat of Emerald one has to mine and process around 5 tonnes of ore so you can assess the ratios. This data I recalled from the time I was doing my Gemological studies so its from 25 years back so might be off by a minor margin but not much but yes High quality Emeralds are much more rarer than Diamonds.
