Bottom Line Recommendation. When it comes to pricing, not all diamond shapes are equal. For the most part, shapes that use less of the rough diamond, such as the round brilliant cut, cost more per carat than shapes such as the emerald, princess and radiant cuts.

But the main reason that round diamonds are more expensive than other shapes is that cutting a round diamond results in more loss of the original rough stone than cutting any other shape. Because so much of the rough diamond goes to waste during the cutting process, round diamonds are the most expensive diamond shape to produce, and that impacts the price even more than the demand.

Cost : One of the most important factors in cost per carat is how much rough stone is wasted during cutting. For this reason, the least expensive diamond cuts are the Asscher and Emerald cuts, which lose an average of 20% of the rough stone. Compared with the average 60% loss that occurs when a round diamond is cut.

Among all, round diamonds are so expensive because this cut requires bigger stones to make. The cutter should remove more than half of a rough stone to do a good job! This is a huge waste of material compared to other cuts.

The most expensive diamond cut is the round brilliant The most popular cut for diamond engagement rings is also the priciest. And it’s not just because it’s the most in-demand: The round brilliant has the most facets of any shape, which require more precision work, and cutters have to discard more of the rough diamond, so you essentially pay for a larger stone than you end up with.

Round cut diamonds are the most expensive diamond shape. The reason for this is that a large amount of the rough diamond is discarded in the cutting and polishing process. As we explained above, the average round cut diamond only uses about 40% of the original stone.

Are bigger diamonds more expensive? Here’s why: Diamonds that are at or just above a magic size are generally more expensive per carat than diamonds that weigh a little less. So if you can live without the symbolic “weight” of these round numbers, you could save some money by choosing a diamond that weighs a few points less.
