The mining industry in India is a major economic activity which contributes significantly to the economy of India.The GDP contribution of the mining industry varies from 2.2% to 2.5% only but going by the GDP of the total industrial sector it contributes around 10% to 11%. In recent times there are three reported deaths due to keeping ekanites at close proximity to three gem dealers. Being the discoverer of the gemstone Mr Ekanayake has never complained about any unusual disorders as he was very careful about handling and safe keeping of the samples, and he took great care to prevent his family members getting exposed to the harmful radiations emitted by the mineral Ekanite.
