This is less of a theory and more of reinstating a fact, but I feel like this would fit here too. So, with emeralds, you can buy diamond items from the blacksmith villagers, you can buy diamond tools and armor for like, 3-5 emeralds last time I checked (this may have changed with updates), or you can buy 1 diamond for 1 emerald.
