Larimar Mine © Turismo de República Dominicana The Mina de Larimar ( Larimar Mine ), popularly known as “ Los Chupaderos ”, is named after the town where the blue pectolite mine is located, approximately 10 kilometres away from Barahona city, in Enriquillo’s region.

In the heart of Bahoruco’s mountains, these mines are the only place in the world where larimar is found–a semi-precious, turquoise-colored stone you will see set in jewelry across Dominican stores. Workers spend eight to nine hours a day underground, mining this rare blue stone from holes that run as deep as 40 meters (150 feet).

Larimar is a rare blue variety of the silicate mineral pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue. [5]

The larimar mines are in the highland Bahoruco mountain region up in the mountains from La Cienaga. You absolutely have to have a sturdy 4x4 to access the area. We found someone in the town of La Cienaga to take us up.

The mine is located in the highest mountain of “Las Filipinas” in the community of Bahoruco, where you will find hundreds of men, naked from the waist up, who are going every day into the deepness of what you could call “hell” searching for Larimar, some have been doing this since over thirty year ago, exposing their lives, to make some money!

Miners, using only hand tools, must find and follow the small veins of Larimar. The best quality stone is often found as far as one hundred feet below the surface; digging through all that rock by hand obviously takes quite a bit of time.
