Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Which is the best grade of diamond to buy?» often ask the following questions:

👉 Which grade of diamond is best?

FL (or Flawless) is the highest grade for clarity. An FL diamond has no imperfections even when magnified 10x by a professional. For color, D or completely colorless diamond is the highest grade. While flawless and colorless diamonds are extremely rare, cut determines a diamond's true value.

👉 Which is the best grade for a diamond?

  • Some professionals consider cut the most important C of diamond quality. A well-cut round brilliant delivers that unmistakable, stop-in-your-tracks light show that telegraphs “diamond” across a crowded room. If the diamond is well cut, most compromises in clarity, color and even carat weight can be forgiven.

👉 What grade of diamond is best?

There are several 'best' grades, depending on whether you are grading clarity, cut or colour.

  • Best clarity is Flawless or Internally Flawless (F) or (IF)
  • Best 'colourless' grade is D
  • Best colour grade for a naturally coloured diamond is Fancy Vivid
  • Best cut depends on who's selling the diamond; many sellers claim that their cut is the 'best'.

Personally, I do as well. However, there are times when the best color grade to buy is actually one with a yellowish tint. For example, if you are buying a yellow gold setting or looking to get a vintage design diamond ring, I would recommend getting lower color diamonds in the I, J and K range to complement the setting.

If you are shopping for investment grade diamonds (larger than 10 carats, D color), the best diamond clarity grades would be IF or FL if you can find them. Price Comparison of SI1 vs. IF Ideal Round Brilliant Cuts Both diamonds will look similar when mounted on a ring, but one costs almost twice as much!

The D color grade is the highest quality color grade a diamond can receive, and can reasonably be called the “best color” for a diamond. However, it’s a little more complicated than that.

The colorless diamonds are the best. The color is ranked between D-Z and the D grade signifies pure diamond with no color whereas Z means a lot of color. The best investments lie between D and H. The D grade has the highest value and appreciates within a relatively short period of time.

The Best Diamond Clarity Grade. Technically, flawless (FL) is the best clarity of a diamond because it means the diamond does not have any inclusions or blemishes, even under 10x magnification. But, just because this is the highest grade that a diamond can receive on the clarity scale does not mean it is the best choice if you are shopping for a diamond.

GIA Diamond Grading Scales: The Universal Measure of Quality March 14, 2013 The prospect of purchasing a diamond may seem daunting, but through GIA, an unbiased authority on diamonds, you have several handy resources to help you select the highest quality diamond.

The fewer inclusions and blemishes the diamond has, the better the clarity grade. While the clarity can significantly impact a diamond’s value (it’s one of the most important 4 Cs), imperfections typically can’t be recognized by the naked or unaided eye. (Clarity and color are what people notices first from the 4 Cs.

The good news is that you don’t need to buy the best-graded diamond on all these attributes in order to have a stone that looks just as clean and colorless as the diamonds of the highest quality. The Best Value for Money: Round-Cut Diamonds

The highest grade for diamond color is D, or completely colorless. But these ratings are determined by expert gemologists comparing against a set of master stones. The naked eye won't be able to detect the slight tint of yellow in a set diamond several grades lower. For sheer value, we recommend a diamond in the G through I range.
