Why do diamonds sparkle? When light goes from one medium to another, it bends. This phenomenon is called refraction. When it goes from rarer to denser it bends towards the normal. In essence, diamonds are tiny, complicated prisms; the light enters through the top, and then is angled around the inside of the diamond before being aimed back towards the top and out through the surface.

A diamond’s sparkle depends on its ability to take in light, then reflect the light back out towards the person looking at the diamond. The more light the diamond reflects from its facets, the more sparkly it will typically look. To do this, diamonds are cut into shapes made up of numerous facets.
